How volleyball has made me a better designer

Playing in a volleyball league recreationally with my friends has surprisingly had an impact on my growth as a designer. Beyond the court, it has taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, collaboration, and communication. Working together to strategize, coordinate, and execute plays has honed my ability to collaborate seamlessly with my peers and fellow designers. The sport’s fast-paced nature has also strengthened my adaptability, problem-solving skills, and quick decision-making. Through volleyball, I’ve developed a resilient spirit, encouraging the determination to push creative boundaries, confidently take on leadership positions, and consistently deliver exceptional design solutions.

How gaming has made me a better designer

My passion for gaming started before I could even remember. As a very young kid, when I’d nag my mom while she played on the first PlayStation, she’d give me an unplugged controller so I thought I was playing and would stop bothering her. From that point on, video games have been in my life in one way or another. Playing video games has unexpectedly enhanced my skills as a designer in many ways. The immersive storytelling and stunning visuals in games have inspired my creative vision and fueled my curiosity for design. Video games have most importantly taught me the importance of user experience and how to create engaging, interactive designs that captivate audiences. It has demonstrated how easy it is to lose a user when importance isn’t given to user experience and how disheartening it is being a user trying to navigate poor design. Furthermore, gaming has shaped me into a generous team player, who understands the significance of working together, giving and receiving feedback, patience and communication. It has taught me how to analyze and adapt to various design elements, gaining insights into effective visual communication and layout.

How the gym has made me a better designer

Weightlifting and hitting the gym have become my sanctuary, not just for my physical health but also for nurturing my mind. When I’m pushing my limits during a workout, the mental fog clears, and creative blocks dissipate, leaving me refreshed and inspired for whatever I’m working on. The rush of endorphins from exercise boosts my mood and confidence, empowering me to tackle challenges with renewed vigour. Taking care of myself is essential; it lays the foundation for being a well-rounded individual and enables me to extend care and creativity to others with the same passion and dedication.
